A little help, and
some good company.

Hi, I'm Billy Treger, and I offer older adults around Washington, DC and Central Maryland companionship and help with rides, errands, and life-story writing, to make staying connected to family, friends, and community easier. I'm in my mid-fifties myself, so this is really about all of us: staying active, independent, and close to the people, places, and stories we care about.

Simply put, I'm here to help. Getting older has its tough days, I know that firsthand, and a lot of it comes down to small things. A ride somewhere. Groceries. A pickup from the cleaners. Someone to do it with instead of alone.

So the plan is you tell me what you need and we'll just do it together. The part I enjoy most is the company, the conversation in the car, a hand of cards, someone to shoot the breeze with. Yes, yes, the errands are helpful and important, but they're also usually how a good friendship gets started.

How I help

It starts with good company.

Everything I do is really about spending quality time together. The rides, the errands, and the writing are how that time takes shape.

Good company

Companionship

Conversation, coffee, a walk, a museum, a hand with a phone that won't cooperate. Time spent with someone who's genuinely glad to be there.

Getting there

Transportation

Rides to appointments, the grocery store, services, lunch, or wherever your week takes you. I'm happy to drive, and glad for the company along the way.

Getting it done

Errands

Pharmacy pickups, shopping, the bank, the little household tasks that pile up. We can knock them out together, or I'll handle them for you. Either way they get easier.

Your stories

Wiser Writers

Let's sit down and capture the life you've lived, the memories, the people, the lessons. It's good fun, and you don't need to be a writer. We just put a little pen to paper together and share stories. More below.

How this works

Every situation is different. Some folks need a ride once a month. Others like a regular visit and some good conversation. Some want help putting a lifetime of stories on paper. There's no package to pick from and no commitment to sign. We start with a conversation, figure out what would actually help, and keep it simple and honest from there. No charge to talk, ever.

A little about me

I'm Billy Treger.

I'm a writer and a lifelong learner with an honest curiosity about people and the lives they've led. For most of my career I've worked in communications, telling other people's and organizations' stories. Somewhere along the way I realized the work I cared about most was simpler and more one-on-one and people-focused than a lot of that.

As I've gotten older myself, I've come to appreciate how much a good life depends on staying connected, to friends, to family, to your community, and to a sense of purpose. I've seen what happens when those connections start to thin out, sometimes over nothing bigger than no longer driving, and I know what a difference one reliable, kind-hearted person can make. Wiser Riders grew out of that.

So that's what I am up to now. I keep good company, and I help with the practical things that make staying connected possible, the rides, the errands, and when someone's ready, writing down the parts of their life worth keeping.

What you can count on

  • The same person every time, me
  • You reach me directly, no system to navigate
  • Flexible, on your schedule
  • An approach shaped around you
  • No obligation to start

For families

A familiar face for someone you love.

A lot of the people who reach out to me are adult children, looking for a little extra support for a parent who wants to stay independent. Sometimes what's needed is a ride. Sometimes errands. Often it's simpler than that: knowing that someone trustworthy is spending real time with your mom or dad, and that you can pick up the phone and reach that same person directly.

I'm glad to keep you in the loop, with your parent's blessing. No system to navigate, no rotating staff, no wondering who showed up. Just one person you've gotten to know, looking out for someone you love.

Wiser Writers

Every life has a story worth keeping.

This is the part of what I do that I love most. We sit down together and capture your life, the memories, the people, the turning points, the things you've learned, so they're preserved and shared with the family and the generations who come next.

It's less about becoming a writer and more about discovering and sharing the stories that matter. You talk, I listen and ask questions and help shape it. Truly, if you can tell me about your day, you can do this.

Ways we can do it

  • Life-story conversations
  • Memoir and legacy projects
  • Guided journaling
  • Family history projects
  • Small writing groups and workshops

Get in touch

Let's just talk.

Reaching out doesn't commit you to anything. No script, no pressure, just a friendly conversation about what would actually help, whether it's for you or for a parent. I read every message myself.

First time getting in touch? That's most of the notes I get. You don't need it figured out or even know which service you want. A vague sense that a little help, or a little company, would be nice is a good starting point.
